Hizbullah’s Nasrallah Against Formation of New Political Alliances
Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announced on Friday that despite new reconciliations, Lebanon does not need to look into the formation of new political parties to maintain peace within its borders. Nasrallah maintained that, ”Lebanon cannot be ruled with the mentality of majorities and minorities … Lebanon represents a special case and can only be ruled through cooperation between its different components.” Nasrallah went on to add that his political party, Hizbullah, would support a unifying national government, even if it were to lose the upcoming national election. Furthermore, Nasrallah told the crowd of supporters in Beirut that Hizbullah was the party responsible for leading talks aimed at building Lebanon’s armed power and that Lebanon should not idly wait around while its enemies strengthen their armed forced. Nasrallah was quoted as saying, “ We should not wait for permission from Israel and the United States to upgrade the capabilities of the Lebanese army.” He added, “We need a brave decision to equip the army with new weapons in order to protect Lebanon without permission from any external side.” All of which left observers with the feeling that neither Hizbullah or the Lebanese army was going to step down anytime soon.
