France Advising Syria Against Military Action in North Lebanon

In the Lebanese News today, France warned Syria against further military action in the northern region of Lebanon. There have been bomb attacks recently in Damascus and Tripoli that are bringing to light the possibility of military intervention by Syria. The French are calling into question Syria’s commitment to Lebanese stability. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has claimed that Lebanon is”posing a threat to his country’s national security.” France is in communication with Damascus, urging them not to intervene for the sake of their plans to ensure stability in Lebanon.

Lebanon became a “source of concern” for the French after they investigated events in the northern region of Lebanon and found that two leaders of a French-Islamic network with connections to al-Qaeda had been in a northern refugee camp.  The two commanders were captured and will be put on trial. President Assad had said in the past that the northern region of Lebanon had become a breeding ground for terrorists and it poses an imminent threat to the national security of Syria.
