Sahara Hostages Released Without a Shot

The whole world has been following the recent kidnapping of European tourists in the Sahara desert of Egypt. They were released on Monday by their kidnappers, who had taken hostage five Italians, five Germans, one Romanian, and eight Egyptian tour guides. According to Reuters, the released Italian hostages stated that they were freed by their kidnappers, and not a result of a military operation. This apparently contradicts earlier comments by officials that the hostages were released as part of a “rescue and recovery” operation. The hostages say that they were not subjected to violence and praised their Egyptian tour guides who protected them throughout the ordeal. One female hostage told Reuters that the women in the group were particularly afraid.
