Shia Mosques Attacked Across Baghdad

As the Holy Month of Ramadan comes to a close, Shia worshipers across Baghdad were hit by multiple suicide attacks leaving dozens dead and wounded. Seen as a disruption in the downward trend of violence, these attacks come at a time when overall violence has been on the decline for the past year – with an 89%  drop since 2006. The dual mosque bombings killed 16 Iraqis, mostly Shia Muslims, as well as leaving another six dead in a separate shooting attack.  In September, “a total of 440 Iraqis were killed in militia and insurgent violence, including 359 civilians, 26 Iraqi soldiers and 55 policemen, according to figures from various ministries.” The spike in violence comes at an auspicious moment for U.S. Forces as more of the security responsibility is being placed on Iraqi soldiers, and the outcome of the invasion is being slowly placed in their hands.
