U.S. Helps Lebanon Rebuild Army

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, David Hale, stated that the U.S. was ready to launch a “long term” effort to rebuild the Lebanese Army. A joint Lebanese-American Military Committee is in charge of the effort. This is a positive step towards cooperation between the two states and helps advance stability not only within Lebanon but also within the Middle East. Considering the problems threatening Lebanon, a strong national army could help protect against invasion by one of its neighbors. The U.S. appreciates Lebanon’s stance on terrorism and rebuilding its army will allow Lebanon to defend itself against such attacks.

Hale also commented on the necessity of Syria staying out of Lebanon and refraining from any intervention. Hale used the opportunity to warn Syria of involvement with Iran and Iraq as well. The U.S. alignment with Lebanon demonstrates to Syria that if she decides to intervene, some sort of reaction from the U.S. may follow.
