Brotherhood Members Arrested in Egypt
Police in Egypt have arrested 32 members of the Muslim Brotherhood for belonging to a banned group and for protesting the Israeli siege of Gaza. The Brotherhood and security sources confirmed to Aljazeera, that 12 men were arrested in raids carried out on Wednesday morning in Fayoum, an agricultural area southwest of the capital Cairo. Another 14 men were rounded-up early on Tuesday following dawn raids in the Mediterranean city of Port Said. Five other men were arrested in Cairo and another in Beni Sueif, south of the capital, on the same day, according to AFP news agency.
The Muslim Brotherhood–Egypt’s largest opposition group–said its members were arrested because they took part in protests against the country’s Gaza border policy and the Israeli blockade earlier this month. Another 30 were arrested at that time of the protests and are mentioned in a previous post. Egypt has occasionally opened the Rafah border crossing, but refused to open it permanently. The Rafah border crossing is the only crossing not directly controlled by Israel.
