Libya Joins African Free Trade Community

Libya, along with 23 other countries, has entered into a new African free trade zone.  The others include, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, the Comoros, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, the Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Egypt and Sudan.

Libya, Sudan, and Egypt are also part of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa).

Comesa is joining with the East African Community (EAC) and the South African Development Community (SADC) to orchestrate the free trade area.

The zone is a result of yesterday’s meeting between African leaders in Uganda.  The countries have also decided to collaborate on issues such as “energy and infrastructure projects.”
