Mubarak Says, “Keep Your Hands Off [Lebanon]“

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak came to Lebanon’s defense once again. He said that Egypt will continue to support Lebanon just as they had when Sadat was president. According to Mubarak, “[Egypt] still back[s] Lebanon and would never stop backing it.” He has met with the current President of Lebanon, Michel Suleiman, even before he was President and was an army commander. Egypt welcomed him as the nominee for President because they believed he was an efficient leader. The Lebanese people seem to agree.

Mubarak and Egypt coming to the defense of Lebanon shows that even though neighbors may want to invade, they still have allies in the region willing to protect them. Not only has the United States stepped in to prepare them with military equipment, but Egypt continues to be a strong force backing them one hundred percent. If there were to be an invasion by Israel or Syria, it would undoubtedly divide the Middle East. This situation has much broader implications now that countries in the region are beginning to take a more active role. Not to mention when a nation like the U.S. gets involved, there is a definite threat of war in the region.
