Yemen to Host Arab Constitutional Courts Meeting

Yemen is set to host the 12th Meeting of the Arab Constitutional Courts Union (ACCU) November 10-12, 2008. The meeting will be held in Sana’a.

Esam al-Samawi, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, said in a statement to news agency Saba that the meeting will discuss key subjects in the field “of modernizing the constitutional judiciary in Arab countries.” The 5th Scientific Forum on Constitutional Insurances for Fair Trials will also be held on the sideline of the meeting. Al-Samawi also stated the goal of the meeting is to enhance cooperation between the Arab countries via exchanging experiences through discourse.

This meeting is an example of how Yemen is trying to exert itself as a key player in Middle Eastern affairs. Given its reputation for internal corruption, it is interesting to see Yemen not only take part in but host meetings that deal with the constitution, equality and fair trials. It will be important to follow the progress of these events and see how or if they impact Yemen on an internal, governmental level.
