Turkish Town–The “Real” Batman?

As reported by CNN, the mayor of the small, oil-producing town of Batman, intends to sue Christopher Nolan, the creator of the latest “Batman” movie, “The Dark Knight,” for commercially appropriating the name without the consent of city officials. Huseyin Kalkan, the leader of the small Turkish town, stated that the town was entitled to revenues from the film, which earned about $1 billion dollars world-wide. In addition, Kalkan believes that there are very strong “possibilities” for their case.

The name “Batman” was not stolen from a small village in Turkey. It was created as a heroic symbol of a young man who had a life that mirrored a bat. Although the city’s and region’s history dates back hundreds of years, the creation of the comic strip “Batman” dates back over 65 years, and the statute of limitations passed decades ago. In addition, it would be unlikely that the United Nations or the International Criminal Court would handle this civil matter. Suffice is to say, and also reported by CNN, the suit was suggested to the Turkish mayor because the small town is struggling economically. However, claiming that one of America’s most successful icons was stolen may not be the best get quick rich scheme.
