Saudi Arabian Chamber Election Includes Woman, First Time

In the western port city of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, 1,600 voters, including 93 businesswomen, will be voting to choose eight candidates for the new board of directors of the Yanbu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (YCCI).

The chamber has a 12-member board, four of which will be appointed by the Minister of Commerce.

What’s more, the list of candidates includes a woman, Alawiyah bing Abdul Fattah Munqal, for the first time.

Although this election is confined to an esoteric group – elite business men and women – it is, nevertheless, a significant step towards a more democratic system in Saudi Arabia.
