A Worker Wins, Despite Slow Saudi Courts
A carpenter named Vijay Kumar, went to labor court in Riyadh in 2005 seeking unpaid wages for five months of work. His case was with the tribunal for 17 months and with the Supreme Labor Commission (SLC) for 19 months. Three years later, Kumar has finally received his unpaid salary , an extra SR3,000 allowance and a money for a flight home.
There are around 7 million foreign workers in the Kingdom, many of whom work for private companies. Kumar says that many workers avoid courts because companies intentionally prolong the cases.
