Iran Seeks Death Penalty for Israeli Spies

The New York Times reported last Tuesday, that after six months of inquiry, Iran has uncovered a spy ring working for the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad. Iranian Prosecutor-General Mortazavi announced that three spies are currently in Iranian custody, and that they will be seeking the death penalty against all of them. Another three suspected of being tied to this spy ring are also currently under surveillance, according to Mortazavi. The suspects had joined Basij, Iran’s volunteer militia, in what is thought to be an attempt to get close to high-ranking officials in the Revolutionary Guard and carry out assassinations. According to Mortazavi, these individuals had been trained to carry out assassinations, plant bombs, drive cars and motorcycles professionally and use sophisticated technology including high-tech cameras, satellites and computers. Iran has a long history of hostility toward Israel, refusing to recognize it and severely against its existence. Israel is becoming increasingly worried that Iran is very close to being able to create nuclear weapons, which Israel fears would be used against it. This is the most likely explanation as to why Israel has sent spies into Iran’s military, although the Israeli government has refused to comment on this situation.
