Lebanese Rally in Beirut for Social Causes
Tens of thousands of Lebanese rallied in the streets of Beirut last Sunday in an marathon for social causes, their companies, their schools, or just to enjoy time out in the fresh air with their family and friends. While the marathon’s purpose would not be breaking news for what is was in other parts of the world, in Lebanon it stood out for what it wasn’t: an event that had no political message or motive.
In Lebanon, masses usually only take to the streets to commemorate a political leader or show support for a militant group. This marathon mirrored the current stable political status in the country and was a refreshing departure from the usual political events. In particular, this marathon’s slogan was health related, ” With strength we run against cancer.”
Aside from the health-related slogan, other topics up for promotion at the marathon included the hazards of cluster munitions, the dangers of drunk driving, and children’s rights. The marathon even included a special tribute to those with disabilities, and many athletes who competed on the day did so with the help of a wheelchair or artificial limbs. The women who were in attendance were just as diversified as the athletes in appearance, as some chose to wear head scarves while others wore tank tops. Hopefully, this can all be a precursor to all the political and social progress Lebanon will hopefully continue to enjoy in the near future.
