Libyan Aid Mission Turned Away From Gaza

The Libyan ship Al-Marwa, laden with food, medicine and other aid, was turned back by Israeli naval vessels before reaching Gaza. According to Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Andy David, the crew of the Al-Marwa “understood that the navy was there and decided to turn around,” clarifying that there was no conflict or confrontation. He added, “We have a very clear policy (on the blockade) which is constantly publicised.”

The Anti-Siege Commitee which pressures Israel to lift the embargo has claimed that Israel blocked the vessel’s communications with Gaza. This is just another chapter in the ongoing saga of Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Israel should consider allowing shipments into Gaza, even if border crossings remain locked down, because sea shipments are easier to secure and check for contraband. Israel has allowed humanitarian ships to dock in Gaza in the past, so this course of action is not unlikely in the future.
