Protests in Amman over Gaza Blockade
Following is an article from the Jordan Times by Mohammad Ben Hussein:
The Islamic Action Front plans to hold a public demonstration in downtown Amman after Friday prayers to protest Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, a party official said on Thursday. The event is part of a stepped-up local campaign by the Islamist movement to condemn the blockade on Gaza.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood has sent letters to Arab nations through their embassies in Amman, calling for more efforts to end the blockade on the city of 1.5 million inhabitants, according to a party statement. Specifically stating, “we urge you to help your brothers in Gaza and to work on ending the unfair blockade, and we believe you are capable of doing so and Arab nations will be witness to that,” said the letter, which has been sent to several Arab countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Lebanon, Sudan and Algeria among others. “Arab people are pained about what is happening in the Palestinian areas, particularly in Gaza,” the letter added.
The IAF appealed to the public to participate in Friday’s demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are suffering a “humanitarian tragedy”. The gathering is expected to attract thousands amid growing public anger over developments in the strip.
The Islamist movement said earlier this week that it will launch a campaign to break the embargo on Gaza, which includes sending a boat from the port city of Aqaba on December 20 and holding a series of demonstrations in various parts of the Kingdom.
