Israel ceased shipments last week following rocket fire and a gun battle between the Israeli Defense Force and Hamas fighters. Gaza has only one power plant, and Israel is the only provider of fuel for that plant. The border crossing will still remain closed even when fuel shipments resume. The past week of conflict has been straining the five-month peace agreement that was in place between Israel and the Palestinians over Gaza.

Netanyahu has been a front runner in polls for Prime Minister over the last two years. Labor party chairman Ehud Barak also dismissed talks of a joint electoral list with Livni’s Kadima party. Surveys have shown an even split, resulting in a deadlock, between the country’s left-center and right-center blocs. This has contributed to the stalling of peacemaking in the past.
