Gen. Raymond Odierno.  Petraeus is essentially accepting a promotion, becoming the commander of overseas operations.  However, this pulls him away from the precise ground situation of Iraq, an area he has begun to master since the successes of his surge plan.  Odierno may be able to keep lessening violence in Iraq and continue bringing more stability to the region that has limped on since the invasion in February, 2003.

In his new post at Central Command, Petraeus will be coordinating troops across the globe by the time the US has a new president and commander-in-chief in January.
