The amount will go up from 30 million to 50 million dollars for the next two years.  The money will be going to the poor communities in Yemen that are struggling to get aid and food.  The number of refugees currently in Yemen is a strain on the economy, which is why the World Food Program has decided to give more money to the country.

Along with those rescued, the Yemen Coast Guard found eight dead bodies near the beach where the refugees were found.  Because Yemen holds the policy of allowing Somali refugees into their country, they will be allowed to stay in Yemen.

The UN Refugee Agency said it is very concerned about the widespread destruction, and according to UNHCR Spokesman Ron Redmond, even though the UN does not normally deal with natural disasters , because “Yemen has been a generous host, to tens of thousands of asylum seekers, refugees coming across the Gulf of Adan, so we believe [providing support/relief] is the least we can do…”

The World Food Program (WFP) is also launching a special assistance program. The WFP provides ready-to-eat food for people who have lost their homes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about the outbreak and spread of water-borne diseases and malaria in the aftermath of the flood. WHO is sending medicines and other supplies to treat 50,000 patients.

Yemen allows Somali refugees into the country, but recently many Ethiopians and Eritreans have been going through Somalia in order to get into Yemen.  The emigrants have been a drain on the economy because many of the Ethiopians and Eritreans have been detained by local police forces but said that they were in the country seeking refugee status.

Because of the large influx of refugees, Yemeni officials have decided to close their borders for the moment while they decide whether or not they will be letting in other refugees.

Both directed their attention towards refugees from Iraq that have slowly seeped into Syria because of the current issues within that country. Dr. Fayssal Mikdad and Radwan Nuwaisir discussed efforts on both the UNHCR and the Syrian Red Crescent in providing the basic needs for a growing refugee population. Both men voiced the cooperation of other the party in its conviction to provide the best resources and care for the refugees. Although encouraging, both the UNHCR and Syria will need this added resolve in order to sustain humanitarian assistance to these refugees, whom may not see the emergence of a peaceful civil society for another decade.
