The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) has already made recommendations for a draft that proposes certain efforts to be made in order to protect women and were made available to the press a week after the national conference on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women ended. The participants of this year’s conference also want to focus on increasing male participation.

This conference took place on November 25 and among the participants were local officials, activists, students and artisans.

The army has blockaded the only road leading out of the city, and 11 people have been killed in the clashes. The violence erupted during protests by the Tabu tribe against discriminatory laws and poor medical care.

Also on Monday, violence erupted between students and security forces in Libya’s second largest city, Benghazi. According to a spokesperson of the opposition group, the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, although there is no clear link between the two events, “both were examples of the Libyan people standing up against the oppression under the rule of President Mu’ammar Al-Qadhafi.”

The Libyan media has failed to report on any of these events, however opposition groups and fellow bloggers have reached out to foreign news and humanitarian organizations in order to report the events that are occurring. Although it seems that relations with the West have improved for Libya, it is still clear that any dissent from within the country is handled with “an Iron Fist” and Libya still has a long way to go before it becomes a truly free nation for its people, an event that most likely will not happen as long as Qadhafi and his entourage are still in control of the country.

Babil, a once violent area south of Baghdad, is the 12th province of a total of 18 to be transferred back to Iraqi control. According to US military commanders, the frequency of attacks in the province has declined by over 80% in the past year, which is a huge improvement.

Although the Iraqi National Security Adviser claims that this progress proves the self-sufficiency of Iraqi forces, US officials insist that they are not totally ready and able to be left to operate on their own. The future is looking bright, though, as violence is declining in other provinces too (namely the western Anbar province, which if provincial elections run smoothly in the area, could also be returned to Iraqi forces very soon).

To commemorate the 45th Anniversary  of the October 14, 1963 Revolution, a huge rally took place in the Radfan district in Yemen. Also, at the Jubail Jabr district of Radfan, Yemenis commemorated the first anniversary of the Al-Habalin incursion, in which four Yemenis died and fifteen were injured. The rallies were organized by the Peaceful Struggle Organization in conjunction with the martyrs’ families. Thousands of Yemenis from throughout the country were in attendance.

The event became violent, however, when policemen clashed with rally participants, who took to the streets protesting the government and throwing stones at a security soldier. Four protesters were injured. According to eye-witnesses, policemen fired bullets and teargas. Approximately twenty-three protesters were arrested during the event, and an additional thirty were arrested for throwing stones at security and police.

Protesters were criticizing the government and called for lifting security check points and random arrests. They were demanding an international tribunal for the crimes committed against people from the south. They were emphasizing that the upcoming elections were not concerning or including the people from the south. Demonstrators were rallying all people to oppose the regime and reform the country.

Said the Israeli President, “There are several religions in Israel, there is only one law and one police.” The violence was sparked when an Arab-Israeli man was accused of driving and playing loud music in a Jewish neighborhood during Yom Kippur, which was considered offensive by many Jewish citizens. An Arab mob formed in response to allegations that the accused had been killed, and violence has gone back and forth ever since, with crimes against property being reported throughout the city.

This event is an example of the precarious peace that exists in communities throughout Israel, and the tit-for-tat nature of violence between Jewish and Arab Israelis.
